Practical questions, plain answers.
Photography, cloakroom rules, food, strollers, dogs, how the museum handles group visits — the things people actually ask before they come.
In the galleries
Can I take photographs?
Yes, in the permanent galleries — without flash, without a tripod, and without a selfie stick. In the temporary exhibitions in the Light Hall, photography is sometimes restricted by lender agreement; signs at the entrance say so. Filming for personal use is allowed; commercial filming requires written permission from the press office.
Are bags and backpacks allowed inside?
Small bags (up to A4 size) can be carried into the galleries. Anything larger must go to the cloakroom — free of charge, with attended counters and self-service lockers. Wet umbrellas and outdoor coats also belong in the cloakroom rather than over your shoulder.
Can I sketch or take notes?
Yes. Pencils only — no pens, ink, or markers. Folding stools are available at the cloakroom for visitors planning to sit and draw at length. Easels and large-format pads need a free permit from the front desk.
Are there benches in the galleries?
Roughly every fourth gallery has a bench. The Munch Hall has two. The Light Hall has long benches running along the centre of the room.
Family visits
Can I bring a stroller (pram)?
Yes — the entire museum is step-free and stroller-friendly. The cloakroom keeps a small stock of front-pack baby carriers if you would prefer to leave the stroller. Lifts connect every floor including the Light Hall.
Is there a baby-changing room?
Yes — on every floor, in the family bathrooms next to the lifts. A nursing room with a comfortable chair sits near the Forum on the ground floor.
Are there activities for children?
Yes — children under 18 enter free, every day. The Forum has a free family backpack with sketchbooks, magnifying glasses and gallery puzzles. Sunday morning workshops run from 11 AM to 1 PM during school terms; drop-in, no booking required.
Food, shopping, services
Is there a café?
Yes. Kafé Bryne, on the ground floor, serves coffee, light lunch and Norwegian pastries from 9 AM to one hour after the museum closes. Restaurant Statholdergaarden Brasserie occupies the western corner of the Forum and serves a slightly more substantial seasonal menu.
Is there a museum shop?
Yes — on the ground floor, free to enter without a museum ticket. Books, prints, design objects, and a small but well-curated selection of Munch reproductions. Open during museum hours and one hour past closing.
Is there free Wi-Fi?
Yes. The network is "Scandinavian Fjord", no password. Speeds are sufficient for browsing but not for video uploads from the Light Hall — the marble lantern attenuates the signal.
Accessibility & service animals
Is the museum wheelchair accessible?
Yes — fully and throughout. Step-free entry, lifts to every floor including the Light Hall, accessible bathrooms on every level, and free wheelchair loans from the cloakroom (no booking required, first come first served).
Are guide and assistance dogs welcome?
Yes, throughout the building. Other dogs are not permitted inside, except during occasional family programmes that are clearly announced.
Are there audio-described or sign-language tours?
Yes. Audio-described tours of the permanent collection run on the second Saturday of every month at 11 AM. Norwegian Sign Language tours run on the fourth Saturday at 1 PM. Both are free with a museum ticket; sign up at the front desk an hour before.
Groups, schools, and tours
How does the museum handle group visits?
Groups of ten or more are asked to book in advance with the museum, typically at least three working days ahead. The museum applies a group rate (around 15% discount). Group bookings are arranged through the museum's bookings office on nasjonalmuseet.no.
Are guided tours offered?
The museum runs free public tours twice daily in Norwegian and once daily in English (typically at 1 PM). Private guided tours are available for a fee through the museum's bookings office. Self-guided audio tours are included in the standard ticket and available in eight languages from the Forum.
Can the museum be hired for an event?
The museum offers out-of-hours hire for the Forum, the Auditorium, and selected gallery spaces. The Light Hall is available for private events on a limited number of evenings each year, arranged through the museum's events office.
